Shaved Watermelon Ice with Lime (Baby & Toddler Friendly!)

Must Try

Your child won’t eat watermelon as-is—but what if it didn’t look like watermelon anymore?

This is one of my favorite texture tricks in feeding therapy. When you freeze watermelon and grate it with a microplane, it becomes something completely different: light, fluffy, and cold, melting the second it hits the tongue. For kids who are on the fence about watermelon—or who resist new foods because of texture—that change alone can make all the difference.

Two ingredients. No cooking. No sugar. Just a new way in.

Shaved Watermelon Ice with Lime

Ingredients

  • Watermelon, cut into thin slices (about 1 inch thick)
  • Fresh lime juice, to taste

Instructions

  1. Lay watermelon slices flat on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  2. Freeze for at least 3 hours, or overnight.
  3. When ready to serve, use a microplane or fine grater to grate the frozen watermelon into a bowl.
  4. Squeeze fresh lime juice over the top and serve immediately.

Work quickly—shaved watermelon ice melts fast! Serve it straight away or pop it back in the freezer for a few minutes if you need a moment.

Feeding Therapy Tips

For babies under 18 months:

Skip the lime juice for babies under 12 months (too acidic for little tummies). For babies 6 months and up, the shaved texture is actually wonderful—it melts instantly, so there’s minimal chewing required. Offer a small spoonful and watch their reaction to the cold temperature and new sensation. Some babies will be surprised; others will immediately want more!

For toddlers and up:

This is a fantastic “food bridge” if your toddler is iffy on watermelon in its regular form. The shaved ice texture is so different that many kids engage with it without the resistance they have at the table. Let them help with the grating (with supervision)—getting involved in making the food increases their comfort with eating it. The lime juice adds a tangy, bold flavor that can actually appeal to sensory-seeking kids who love strong tastes.
